The history of Lukenya Housing Cooperative Society dates back to 2009 during a Housing Microfinance Conference that took place in Dar es Salaam. Among the participants of the conference were Veronique Su – Regional Director of Swisscontact, Andrew Mnjama and Mary Mathenge – CEO National Cooperative Housing Union (NACHU).
After the conference, there was another meeting at Swisscontact offices between Swiss contact & NACHU to explore partnership in the housing co-operatives sector. Andrew Mnjama pioneered the idea of a housing cooperative which would curb the development of slums in his home area (Lukenya). In his efforts to run develop the idea; he sought the assistance from his neighbors (Daystar University – Athi River Campus) where he met with James Karau a lecturer. Soon, other neighbors –Lukenya Getaway & Lukenya group of schools came on board. A committee representing the University, Lukenya Getaway, Lukenya group of schools and the Lukenya community was formed. This committee understood the vision, believed in it and decided to run with it.
